“The environment must be rich in motives which lend interest to activity and invite the child to conduct his own experiences” – Maria Montessori.
Every year, around 140 children come together at The Ark Primary School to experience an educational environment built to nurture creativity and provide an education to help them step into the future with confidence.
In our current state of globalization and economic expansion, knowledge of the English language, and a daring and creative mind has become a necessity more than a personal attribute.
We, at Karunakarya Trust have recognized these necessities as an obstacle in the development and sustainment of socially disadvantaged and marginalized communities. In June 2009, we took a step towards addressing this problem by establishing a kindergarten and primary school called “The Ark” aiming to nurture young minds through holistic education. The Ark is located in Eraiyur, a small village in the Kanchipuram district of Tamil Nadu.
The school functions on the principles defined by the Montessori School system which revolves around learning from materials and holistic experiences. The low class strength gives our teachers a good opportunity to follow the development of each individual student.
As one the school’s main purpose is to provide a quality primary education in an area which is educationally and socially disadvantaged, it provides an education at an affordable rate taking into account the average income per family in the focus area.
“The Transport facility and low fees structure are the two main factors that attracted us to admit all our children in The ARK School” – Mrs. Amul (enthusiastic parent)
We, as an organization care for the overall development of the community. Through the children who come to the school, we take advantage of the opportunity to reach out to their parents. Through result based management we reach out to the community on the two main issues identified in the surrounding communities: Gender discrimination and the involvement of parents in their children’s education. The teaching and non-teaching staff of the school are mostly employed from Eraiyur and the nearby villages.
The Ark primary school is an active part of our mission statement: ‘To empower the children and youth, through holistic education and community based approach.’ by empowering the students through physical and emotional development, linguistic skills, and intellectual and social development.
