COVID-19 relief work

COVID-19 relief work took up most of the year, where Karunakarya supplied groceries and essentials to the migrant workers and to those who were in dire need of support. Educational activities and awareness programs were conducted for the children of the Ark School and from our other projects.

Life-skill & career preparation

From 2018 – 2019, Karunakarya collaborated with 4 government schools for life-skill & career preparation sessions. This expanded to 9 government schools for the academic year 2019 – 2020.

ELCs set up

Additional Evening Learning Centres (ELCs) were set up in villages and slum relocation projects around Eraiyur. Namely, in Gunduperumbedu, Arambakkam, and Navalur.

Shifting focus

Shifting focus from vocational training at the KCC to aptitude building with career preparation and life-skills courses for the teens and youth.

Result-Based Management (RBM)

Development of Result-Based Management (RBM) concepts and the Holistic Development Approach for our projects. The staff were trained to adapt these concepts into their teaching methods for the children in all projects.

Karunakarya Community College shifts

Karunakarya Community College shifts to a newly constructed building in Eraiyur, shifting focus from the city environment to rural areas.

The Ark Nursery & Primary School

The Ark Nursery & Primary School was set up and opened for admissions in the village of Eraiyur.

Karunakarya Creations

Start of Karunakarya Creations, a handicrafts and textile production unit that started out as tailoring classes in Eraiyur in October 2007. The project gave career opportunities to women from difficult family situation and helped them earn a living. The project was completed in 2020.

Expansion of Evening Tuition Centres

Expansion of Evening Tuition Centres to Theresa Nagar, Santhosh Nagar, and Eraiyur. In Santhosh Nagar we conducted football coaching for kids and teens. The project was handed over to an external party in 2009.

Tsunami Relief and setting up NFEs and Tuition Centres

Tsunami Relief and setting up NFEs and Tuition Centres in Tamil Nadu’s worst affected villages of Kallar and Velipalayam. The project was completed on September 30th, 2006.

Expansion of NFE

Expansion of NFE including Women Literacy Classes and Evening Tuition Centres to Periyar Nagar, Thiruvanmiyur Fishermen’s Village, and Taramani.
